The Story

Why SCOUT?

Bobcats aren’t loud, flashy, or brute-force animals. They’re observant, patient, selective, efficient, and deeply familiar with their terrain.

That’s the idea behind SCOUT: Savvy Curator of University Technologies.

UC Merced is powered by an increasingly rich ecosystem of websites, services, systems, policies, and people. The information we need is usually here… knowing where to find it and how the pieces fit together is often the harder part.

SCOUT was created to help make sense of that complexity. Like the bobcat, it observes first, focuses on what’s relevant, and moves with purpose; bringing together the university knowledge and context that matter to the question at hand.

The name also describes what we hope becomes a natural part of working at UC Merced:

Instead of searching multiple systems, SCOUT it.
Instead of guessing where to start, SCOUT the way forward.

SCOUT isn’t just a name. It’s a way of thinking about the role an AI assistant should play here: observant rather than loud, useful rather than exhaustive, and grounded in the university it serves.

The Icon

The SCOUT icon tells the same story visually. What begins as scattered information gradually comes into focus, revealing a familiar pattern that was there all along.

A messy cluster of dots.At first, it looks like noise
University knowledge lives everywhere - policies, procedures, websites, documentation, services, and people. The information you need already exists, but it's often spread across many different places.

Your question helps SCOUT identify the pieces of information that matter. Rather than relying on a single document or keyword, SCOUT begins gathering relevant context from across its available knowledge.

Not everything belongs in the answer.
SCOUT evaluates what it found, keeping the information that's relevant to your question while filtering away what isn't.

Policies, documentation, and other sources rarely tell the whole story on their own. SCOUT brings the relevant pieces together into one coherent response, connecting information that would otherwise remain scattered.

The answer was always there. SCOUT simply helped reveal it—bringing together the right information so you can spend less time searching and more time getting work done.
